The sport shirt, or casual button-down shirt, can be considered a staple in just about any man’s wardrobe. Because most sport shirts are meant to be worn either untucked or tucked-in, they are cut shorter in the torso than a typical dress shirt. Also, the fusing in the cuffs and collar is usually less substantial and softer overall than in a dress shirt. The sport shirt is an extremely versatile garment, and depending on the type and style, can be worn in situations ranging from casual to a more dressed up “smart-casual.” The key is all in the pattern and detailing. A plaid shirt with double chest pockets, snap buttons, and an overall “Western” feel is definitely more on the casual side than a neat tattersall patterned shirt with more structure in the collar, placket, and cuffs. That being said, most of our big and tall sport shirts will fall somewhere in between, and there’s no sense in overthinking an outfit or being too rigid when applying “style rules.” We encourage every guy to explore all the styles and find what they truly enjoy wearing.
